Privacy Policy
MarkDroid is a Mac app that lets you browse and edit the files on your Android phone in Finder. It is built and published by Ajeet Kumar (“I”, “me”). This policy covers the MarkDroid app and explains what it does with your information. The short version: nothing leaves your Mac and your phone.
What data the app collects
None. MarkDroid does not collect, transmit, sell or share any personal data or usage data, so there is nothing for me to use. In particular, it has:
- no accounts or sign-in,
- no analytics, telemetry or crash-reporting services,
- no advertising, and no tracking across apps or websites,
- no servers of its own. The app never sends your files, or information about you or your devices, to me or to anyone else.
Your files
Files move only between your Mac and your phone, over the USB cable or, if you use wireless debugging, over your local network. To show your phone in Finder, MarkDroid keeps temporary copies of the files you open on your Mac. They are used only so you can open and edit them, and are never read for any other purpose.
What stays on your Mac
To work, MarkDroid saves a few things on your Mac, inside its own sandboxed folders. They are used only to run the app and are never sent anywhere:
- Settings, such as the cache period, Open at Login and the connection method chosen for each phone.
- Your phone's serial number, used only to tell your devices apart and name each mounted phone.
- Phone storage figures (free and total space), so they can be shown in the app.
- Folder listings of folders you've opened, so Finder can show changes made on the phone.
- Pending changes waiting to be saved to the phone, so they can be retried if it disconnects.
- Your App Store purchase records, signed by Apple, so the app can confirm your purchase without going online.
Third parties
MarkDroid contains no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs, and I do not share data with any third party, parent company or partner. The only other parties involved are:
- Apple, which handles all purchases through the App Store and, only if you choose to share them, crash reports (see below). Apple's handling of this is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Android Debug Bridge (adb), Google's standard tool for talking to Android phones, which MarkDroid includes unmodified. It runs only on your Mac, inside MarkDroid's sandbox, and sends nothing to Google or anyone else.
If MarkDroid ever works with a third party that could access user data, that party will be required to protect it at least as well as this policy does, and this policy will be updated before that happens.
Purchases
The free trial, Yearly and Lifetime options are sold by Apple through the App Store. I never see your name, Apple ID, email or payment details. Apple sends your Mac a signed record of what you've bought, and MarkDroid checks it on your Mac.
Permissions the app uses
- USB devices, to talk to your phone over the cable.
- Local network, to talk to adb on your own Mac and, if you turn on wireless debugging, to your phone over Wi-Fi. MarkDroid does not use this to reach the internet. You can turn it off at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.
Diagnostics
MarkDroid writes diagnostic messages, which can include file and folder names from your phone, to the macOS system log on your Mac. You can view them in the Console app. macOS deletes them automatically, and they are never sent to me.
If you turn on “Share with app developers” in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements, Apple may send me anonymized crash reports. I use them only to fix bugs. You can turn this off at any time in the same place.
How long data is kept, and how to delete it
- Copies of opened files are deleted automatically after the cache period you set in Preferences, and all of them are deleted when you unmount a phone.
- Everything else (settings, serial numbers, storage figures, folder listings and purchase records) stays on your Mac until you delete it.
Because all of it lives only on your Mac, you can delete it at any time by unmounting your phones and removing MarkDroid along with its data. If you need help with that, email me. Deleting purchase records doesn't cancel your purchase. Choose Restore Purchase in the app to get it back. To cancel a Yearly subscription, go to App Store › your account › Subscriptions.
Your choices and rights
Because I don't collect any data, I hold nothing about you to view, export, correct or delete, and there is no consent to withdraw inside the app. You stay in control of what's on your Mac, and you can withdraw the app's system permissions at any time in System Settings.
If you email me, I use your message and email address only to reply, and I delete them when you ask. You can send any privacy question or request, including a request to delete our emails, to the address below, and I'll respond within 30 days.
Children
MarkDroid is a general-purpose utility. It is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If MarkDroid ever adds a feature that sends information off your Mac, such as an optional feedback form, it will be opt-in, it will ask for your permission first, and this policy will be updated before that version is released. The date at the top shows when the policy last changed.
